It's been a few months since the tragic death of Friends star Matthew Perry came out, and fans are still mourning this terrible loss that left a hole impossible to fill in the entertainment industry. Many people in showbusiness, including all of his Friends co-stars, have shared their tributes to the actor, but understandably, his family has remained away from the spotlight for the most part.
RelatedIt's baffling that the BAFTAs would exclude Matthew Perry from their in memoriam segment, and fans made that clear.
Recently, however, his stepfather has opened up about how they are dealing with the intense grief from such an important loss. Most interestingly, he also confessed that Matthew Perry had spoken about what he thought what the public reaction to his own death would be.
It's no secret that Matthew Perry struggled with addiction for many years in his life, and the fact that this ongoing battle was public knowledge led the actor to have very dark reflections on his own death.
Keith Morrison, a successful Canadian journalist and Matthew Perry's stepfather, recently shared some disturbing details about the way the Friends star spoke about how he thought people would react to his death.
RelatedThe actress insists her 'Friends' co-star was in a good place despite his untimely death and past history with addiction.
Apparently, he thought that it would be sad, but not unexpected, which is not something easy to hear from someone you care about. According to Keith Morrison, the actor said that people would probably be "be shocked" if he "suddenly died," but that "not too many people would be surprised. And he was right."
Matthew Perry passed away in October 2023 from "the acute effects of ketamine", and as much as it pains his stepfather to say it, he reacted exactly how the actor had predicted. "It was the news you never want to get, but you think someday you might," he shared. Speaking about Matthew's struggle with addiction, he said that "he felt like he was beating, but you never beat it, and he knew that, too."
It's only been a few months since Matthew Perry's tragic passing, and the family is obviously still having a hard time processing it. His stepdad also opened up about what the relationship between the actor and his family was like right before his death, which is something people tend to speculate on whenever someone's death is as dramatic as Matthew.
"Toward the end of his life, they [the actor and his mother, Suzanne] were closer than I’ve seen them for decades and texting each other constantly," Keith Morrison said. "So, he was happy, and he said so, and he hadn't said that for a long time. It's a source of comfort, but also, you know, he didn't get to have his third act, and that's not fair."
When it comes to dealing with grief, Keith spoke candidly and said that it's something he and the rest of the family struggle with "every day," and probably will for a long time. "It's with you all the time. And there's some new aspect of it that assaults your brain, and it's not easy, especially for his mom."
As hard as this moment is for the family, Keith Morrison and several friends of the late actor are focused on honoring his memory. They set up the Matthew Perry Foundation in his honor to help peoplethat struggle with the same things the actor did. "The goal is to do whatever can be done to help organizations rescue people in difficult situations and get them some help."
