Julia Roberts lost her mother Betty Lou Bredemus on Thursday, Feb. 19. The Oscar winner’s mom was 80 years old and died following a long battle with lung cancer.
Bredemus’ death comes just one year after Roberts lost her half-sister, Nancy Motes, to an apparent overdose. Following her death, which included a suicide note, Roberts revealed that she leaned on her mother and family for support despite having a tense relationship with Motes. "It's hour by hour some days, but you just keep looking ahead," Roberts told the Wall Street Journal. "But [as with] any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family."
In addition to her Oscar-winning daughter, Betty Lou is survived by her son, TV and movie actor Eric, 58, and daughter Lisa, 49, plus her grandchildren including actress Emma Roberts (Eric’s daughter) and Julia’s three kids Phinnaeus and Hazel, 10, and Henry, 7.
Bredemus’ first husband, and Julia’s father, Walter Grady Roberts died from throat cancer when the star was just ten.
